In June 2024, Irina Matuzava published an article on the CfAS sponsored People, Fire, and Pines project entitled “Facing a Surge in Wildfires, the U.S. Government Turned to Native Wisdom and Advanced Archaeology.” The article, which appeared in the online journal Resilience and was produced by the Human Bridges Project, highlights the work of the CfAS working group led by Evan Larson. Collaborators included scientists and Native American experts who co-produced an array of peer-reviewed scientific articles, children’s storybooks, museum displays, fire management policies, re-introduction of Native-led fires, and much more. As the article shows, the People, Fire, and Pines project lives on long past its initial CfAS grant and continues to add to our understanding of the relationship between indigenous fire practices and the red pine forests of the Border Lakes region of North America.
