disaster risk, natural hazards, governance

Interest in Synthesis

Understanding and governance of disaster risk and climate change requires a thorough understanding of the wide range of intervening factors, actors and underlying processes, as well as the complexity of the multiple interactions between the human and natural dimensions. In addition, the growing scientific evidence of the association between climate change and extreme events – which can lead to disasters – causing loss and damage to both the human and natural environments, highlights the need for effective cooperation between these fields, as well as between various disciplines in the social and natural sciences. Thus, the challenges cannot be addressed from the perspective of a single discipline, but require a broader and more ambitious interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach to successfully address their complexity.
